There’s nothing quite like summertime in Colorado—the sun is shining, the trails are calling, and dog-friendly patios are bustling with tail wags and cold drinks. For many of us, our dogs are our favorite adventure buddies, and there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the season together. But with all that summer fun comes a few extra things to consider to keep your pup happy, healthy, and safe.

Here at Harmony Veterinary Center, we love seeing our patients out living their best lives. So let’s talk about how to enjoy the great outdoors (and indoors!) safely with your four-legged friend this season.

☀️ Mind the Heat

Colorado’s dry climate can be sneaky. Even if it doesn’t feel sweltering to us, the sun and heat can take a toll on our pets—especially those with dark coats, flat faces (like pugs and bulldogs), or underlying health conditions.

  • Avoid peak heat hours: Try to walk or play outside in the early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler.
  • Never leave your dog in a parked car: Even a few minutes can be dangerous. Temperatures can climb quickly—even with the windows cracked.
  • Watch for signs of overheating: These include excessive panting, drooling, weakness, or collapse. If you notice these, get your pup into the shade and contact us right away.
  • Remember to bring sunscreen: sun exposure is natural and good for dogs in moderation, but don’t overlook the risk of sunburn.

🐾 Protect Those Paws

Pavement, sand, and rocks can get extremely hot during the summer—hot enough to burn your dog’s paw pads.

  • Do the 5-second test: Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If you can’t hold it there for five seconds, it’s too hot for your dog.
  • Use booties or paw balm: Protective gear can help, especially on long walks or hot trails.
  • Stick to shaded paths or grassy areas whenever possible.

🏞️ High Altitude Adventures

Planning to hike or camp in the mountains? Lucky you! Just remember that dogs feel the effects of altitude too.

  • Take it slow: Give your dog time to acclimate, especially if they’re not used to higher elevations.
  • Pack for them too: Bring extra water, snacks, and a lightweight collapsible bowl. A doggy first aid kit is also a smart idea.
  • Know their limits: Not every dog is built for strenuous hikes. If your pup starts lagging behind, panting heavily, or seems uncomfortable, it’s time to rest—or head back.

🌊 Swimming & Water Safety

Some dogs are natural swimmers, others—not so much! Whether you’re at a lake, stream, or dog-friendly pool:

  • Supervise at all times: Even strong swimmers can get tired or caught in a current.
  • Use a canine life vest if you're boating or around deep water.
  • Rinse off after swimming: Especially in lakes or streams, rinsing helps remove bacteria, algae, or irritants from their coat.
  • Keep an eye out for blue-green algae: This toxic algae blooms in still, warm water and is dangerous if ingested.

🚗 Road Trips & Patio Days

Summer road trips and patio brunches are even better with a furry co-pilot. Here’s how to make it stress-free for everyone:

  • Buckle up: Use a harness seatbelt or crate in the car to keep your pup safe.
  • Plan breaks: Stop for water, potty breaks, and a stretch every couple of hours.
  • Check the patio vibe: Make sure there’s shade, fresh water, and space for your dog to relax. Not all dogs love the hustle and bustle of a crowded patio—listen to their cues.

🐾 Wildlife Awareness

Living in Colorado means sharing our space with wildlife—from squirrels to snakes, and even the occasional bear or elk.

  • Keep your dog on leash in unfamiliar areas.
  • Don’t let them chase or approach wildlife.
  • Be cautious in tall grasses or brushy areas where snakes may be hiding.
  • Check for ticks after every outdoor adventure.
